Carroll County was named after one of the
signers of the Declaration of Independence, Charles Carroll. Grayson County was formed from Wythe County in 1792 and was named for one of the first two senators from Virginia, William Grayson.
Both counties are steeped in history and today are shining beacons of agriculture and enterprise. Carroll County was established in 1842 from Grayson County. Part of Patrick County was later added to the lands that comprise the county.

Our biggest claim to fame is the Hillsville Flea Market (more properly known as
the VFW Flea Market & Gun Show), which has been called the largest American flea
market to the east of the Mississippi River. It is held twice a year.
In 2004, the Labor Day show attracted 650,000 visitors, and the Memorial Day show attracted 250,000 visitors. Vendors and customers have come here from as far away as Germany, Africa and South Korea.
Many outdoor attractions offer hiking, cycling, fishing, hunting and camping to
visitors. Explore state parks such as Claytor Lake, Fairy Stone, Grayson Highlands and New River Trail. In addition, visitors to Jefferson National Forest can enjoy birding, horseback riding, skiing and more.
Stunning vistas line Virginia's famous Blue Ridge Parkway, a road which winds travelers through the beauty of nature. Those who prefer to explore natural wonders on foot can hike the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. This is the ideal way to travel through the wild, scenic, wooded, pastoral and culturally significant lands of the Appalachian Mountains.
Shot Tower Historical State Park is a highlight of local history attractions. The central feature is the titular tower, a structure built over 150 years ago to hold the firearms of the early settlers. Other, more natural sites of interest include Chateau Morrisette Winery and Levering Orchard.
